Ioanna

Social media, Design & Admin Assistant

Hi, I’m Ioanna!

After graduation, whilst doing my job research, I came across Edible London through my UC coach. Once, I started researching the organisation, I fell in love with the work they were doing in the community, so I decided to apply. I managed to land the social media, design & admin assistant role.
I develop and manage the WordPress website, including social media strategy & marketing content creation. I apply search engine optimisation (SEO) on the website’s pages. I have written many copywriting blog posts World Environment Day | Greenpeace Day | World Food Day | Case study: St' Ann's Library
I manage e-mail campaigns using a CRM thus supporting network growth. I have communicated our mission as an organisation & focused on people inside/ outside the organisation by collaborating with the public & media (PR).

I was lucky to bear witness to many projects that had a positive impact locally and internationally on the community. Hundreds of kids in Cyprus benefited from our shipment to support their community, collaborations with Jamaica, and many more. At a local level, a project such as St. Ann’s Cookbook in which I saw a grey space transforming into an incredible green sitting spot where people feel included, validated, and safe. At Wolves Lane Centre you can find our largest greenhouse, which is a great escape from London’s madness. That space has helped me to get that creativity boost I needed many times during this journey.  Meeting many of our volunteers and hearing their stories has been a rewarding addition. During my journey, I have received many thank you messages from local families that Edible London distributes food weekly to their homes and we are grateful for their support. I heard people telling me how needed is the food offered every Thursday from Highway House. Edible London has been actively providing for the community and I was there to document it 😀

If I was veg or fruit, I would be an olive. That’s because the olive is an ancient symbol associated with winning since the Ancient Greece Olympics. And winning is what I do.

During my time at EL, I have enhanced my hard and soft skills. I have practiced many tools such as Adobe creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Illustrator), Canva, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Linktree. I have managed and created strategies for the WordPress website and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. In terms of soft skills, I have improved my critical thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, professional writing, teamwork, digital literacy, leadership, professional attitude, work ethic, career management and intercultural fluency, and many more due to my interaction with the team in Edible and working in our projects. In the future, I am ambitious that I will be successful in my field. In terms of an individual level, I have expanded my knowledge on environmental issues and the benefits of a plant-based diet which I believe had a positive impact on myself and the people around me. I hope I continue educating myself and provide a helping hand to people in need and the environment.

Assistant Quality Control

Yussuf's work involves helping Tammy our Director to sort out the orders we get from beneficiaries, count and record how many items we get, sort it out by date, and how many items we get. Do a quality control check to see if the item we get is useable for the donations we give out each day. Record that donation and when the divers come out we put them in their cars and send them off towards their destination. Meet Yussuf, our Assistant Quality Control.

Assistant Quality Control

Hi, I’m Yussuf!

I got involved with Edible London during my search for a new role, I've been wondering to try out, I looked through their website and saw amazing things they were doing to help out the community. I wanted to work as a team member and help out the local community. My role here in Edible London is to help out and order the items we get donated by various distributers to our food hub. We then pick and choose what we can give out to each receiving food bank or hub. We then load the items we have chosen (Vegan food) and then send them away with one of our drivers.

The work that edible London has provided is necessary because of the way we distribute our products to local charities, and always making sure that they get it in time with most being family hampers to each individual is such an important part of our role. We have helped out tens and thousands of people to give them food in their bellies and most importantly the quality of the food being vegan and keeping the body healthy. The more items we receive from donations the more we can feed our community.

If I was a fruit, I would be a mango 🥭 because they are sweet and I think everyone appreciates a little sweetness in their lives.

Yes, my journey in Edible London has changed me as a person massively, one of the things that are has changed about me is my diet and the way I look at vegan food, before I didn't have that much knowledge about vegan products, to begin with. At Edible London, I find it quite easy talking to my co-workers about certain products we receive. I also find it quite amazing how sunny put around the best people to help him out during the pandemic and still manage to feed so many people out there. It is very motivational for me to see so many people getting fed where non of our products gets wasted.
My work involves helping my manager (Tammy) sort out the orders we get from beneficiaries, count and record how many items we get, sort it out by date and how many items we get. Do a quality control check to see if the item we get is useable for the donations we give out each day. Record that donation and when the divers come out we put them in their cars and send them off towards their destination.
I started edible London by the end of May from Stamford hill, the first HQ, where I worked first. Now, we have moved location to a much bigger and better place to Benard road. My journey included a lot of steps for me to look forward to which made my job as a quality control assistant much more fun while working for Edible London. The smiles we saw towards the people saying thank you for helping out makes working for a CIC company pleasant. I cannot be any prouder than before. I thank Edible London for giving me this opportunity and helping me out when in time of need.

Personal Assistant to the CEO

I am the personal assistant to the CEO at Edible London, who is known as Sunny. My role here involves helping Sunny with his schedule, emails, and general admin tasks in the office. I primarily support Sunny and help to make his working day and sometimes personal life more manageable.

I adore the ethos at Edible London; everyone you meet here is welcoming and want to help using their own skills to tackle food poverty, which led me to join the team at Edible London.  I was also attracted to the growing side of the operation. It is incredible what Edible London does by growing organic food at their growing sites whilst showing the community how they can do the same for themselves. I knew I wanted to be a part of an organisation that helps others take the lead on their health and wellbeing.

Edible London's work is necessary to the local community because it not only distributes food to the less unfortunate but provides a safe space to learn about growing fruit and vegetables and the benefits of a plant-based diet. Edible London also helps with food waste, which allows the broader community and environment, as good food does not end up in landfill sites and go uneaten.

I have learnt a great deal whilst being Sunny's personal assistant, especially in my short time at Edible London. During this role, I learned how to keep the office organised by maintaining the office filing system, managing the CEO's diary, scheduling meetings, and prioritising workload. I also improved my verbal and written communication as I became a point of contact between Sunny and internal/external members to Edible London. Despite the general administrative tasks of my role, I got to meet new people who had the same ethos as Edible London, which helped me develop my interpersonal skills.  I also grew my knowledge of food growing and how food relates to better health and wellbeing.  Through this role, I also had first-hand experience of how a CEO runs a business; I got to know a lot about the entrepreneurial side of Edible London and how Sunny engages with the community to make London Edible.

My hopes for the future are to take what I've learned at Edible London and apply this to a vision of my own one day. Not specifically in the food sector, but hopefully for my enthusiasm in architecture and transforming our surroundings to benefit the environment and the people.

If I were a fruit, I would be an Avocado! I love avocados! They are my favourite fruit, and they are so versatile. You can eat them in a salad, put them on your toast or have them with nachos. You've got to love avocados. I hope one day I can grow an avocado tree.

Piotr has been volunteering with us for quite some time. We offer him this position through the Kickstart Scheme. At first, he used to do quality control at Stamford Hill. However, now at our new headquarters, he focuses on distribution. Meet Piotr our Assistant Quality Control.

Piotr

Assistant Quality Control

Hi, I am Piotr!

My journey with Edible London was when a friend of mine was picking up a palette from the old office at Stamford Hill. She got informed about the company, so we decided to start volunteering together.

After some time of volunteering, I got offered the kickstart role. In the beginning, I was mostly doing quality control. However, in our new headquarters building, I am mainly focusing on distribution.

Citizens of this area are underprivileged. It is nice to know that companies like Edible London do some good to help the community.
If I was a vegetable, a fruit, or an edible plant, I would be dill because I am hard to deal with.

During my time in Edible London, I have learned that 25 hours a week is ideal for your mental health, and I am excited to get another job where I can work the same number of hours. Hopefully, in a few months, I look back on this experience and hope that it has made me a better person.

Hussein

Assistant Urban Farmer

Hi, I’m Hussein!

Since a young age, I have always been triggered by the beauty of nature. After I started questioning the methods of growing, I wanted to learn more. The moment I learned about Edible London’s goals, I had to get involved! Growing organic food in London is not an easy task, that’s why I grabbed this unique opportunity. My role is focused on developing urban farming methods to figure out better ways of growing. A big part of it is the maintenance of the plants and repurposing soil and dead plants. It gets exciting when we experiment with our plants' varieties to see if they grow. My goal is to make London edible.

I think the work that is done in Edible London is necessary because at the end of the day we do charity work that helps people that are facing food poverty and struggle with mental health issues. All the food that we grow and harvest is the ingredients for fresh meals that get donated. Apart from that, turning grey spaces into green improves our overall environment for all the living organisms, especially with all the pollution in London.

If I was either a vegetable or a fruit, I would be a tomato for no particular reason just the fact that they are delicious.

Through this experience, I have learned the importance of community. Being part of a team has taught me many lessons and gained beautiful memories. I believe that if we all knew how to grow food, our communities would be much better. In the future, I would like to pass the knowledge that I gain to other people, so we can improve our communities together.

Abeed

Assistant Urban Farmer

Abeed loves growing organic fruits and veggies. Being part of the Edible family has been a positive experience for him that has led him to achieve his goals. He enjoys helping the most vulnerable and fighting social inequalities. Meet Abeed our Assistant Urban Farmer.

Meet Abeed

Abeed

Assistant Urban Farmer

Hi, I’m Abeed!

Edible London is an organisation that gives voice to people about social inequality. That’s one of the facts, that drove my attention towards this CIC. I always wanted to support the most vulnerable because, in a world where individualism dominates, we can often forget what other people are going through. My role here is to grow organic fruits and vegetables so we can send them to the food banks.

I believe the greatest task of Edible is the nutritional value that offers in the community. By creating green spaces in London, it makes organic and healthy food more accessible to everyone. Most products sold today are GMOs which affects negatively the environment. Our rooted methods of urban farming are chemical-free and we use organic techniques to protect our community and our environment.

If I was a vegetable or fruit, I would probably be an apple because it is the most rejuvenating fruit of all.

During my time in Edible, I felt like being part of a family which has taught me many things. As a farmer, I learned all the processes of growing and I will continue growing. As an individual, I learned what types of food I should eat to have maximum nutritional value. That is important to me because as a professional athlete I had to learn how to gain control over my cravings. So, overall, I have become more discipline during my journey here. My goal for the future is to participate in the Olympic Games.
